Prepare a calm canvas

Perfume tends to hold better on hydrated skin. After bathing, use an unscented moisturiser and allow it to absorb before spraying. Strongly fragranced lotions can change the composition unless layering is intentional.

Never apply fragrance to irritated or broken skin. If you are sensitive, patch test first and consider wearing perfume on clothing instead.

Choose placement by effect

Warm areas such as the sides of the neck, upper chest, inner elbows and wrists help fragrance diffuse. Two or three well-placed sprays often create a more graceful aura than a cloud applied everywhere.

For a private scent, apply beneath clothing to the chest or forearms. For more presence, use the sides or back of the neck. Avoid spraying close to the face.

Spray, then leave it alone

Hold the bottle 15–20 centimetres from skin so the mist lands evenly, then let it dry. Rubbing wrists creates heat and friction, making the opening disappear faster and muddying how you experience it.

Wait before adding more. Perfume often becomes more noticeable as it warms, and your nose needs time to adjust.

Clothing, hair and spray count

Fabric can hold scent longer. Spray from a distance and test an unseen area first because oils and coloured liquid may stain silk, leather or pale fabric. For hair, mist a brush lightly or use a product made for hair.

There is no universal spray count. Strength, weather, room size and social distance all matter. Begin low—especially with a new bottle—and ask someone nearby before adding more.

• Office, clinic or classroom: subtle and close.
• Outdoor daytime: a light extra spray may suit moving air.
• Wedding or evening: richer presence can work, but allow for crowds and heat.
