Performance

Longevity vs projection

A perfume can whisper for ten hours or fill a room for two. Separating longevity, projection and sillage makes performance easier to judge—and helps you wear fragrance with intention.

01

Three terms, three questions

Longevity asks how long fragrance remains detectable. Projection asks how far it radiates at a given moment. Sillage describes the scented wake left as someone moves through a space.

A musky skin scent may last until evening with little projection. A bright aromatic perfume may announce itself strongly at first and become quiet after lunch.

02

Why performance varies

Temperature, humidity, skin moisture, airflow, fabric and application affect the result. Repeated exposure can also make your brain tune out a familiar smell while somebody beside you can still notice it.

Concentration labels offer clues, not guarantees. An eau de parfum is not automatically louder or longer-lasting than every eau de toilette; formula matters more than the label alone.

03

Measure without guesswork

Test your normal spray count on clean skin and note the time. Check after fifteen minutes, one hour, four hours and near day’s end without pressing your nose directly to the spot. Ask someone whether they notice it at conversational distance.

Repeat on another day before deciding. Weather and attention can distort one wear, and testing beside several perfumes makes any result unreliable.

04

Improve wear, gently

Apply to moisturised skin and consider one or two sprays on clothing when the fabric is safe. Store the bottle upright, away from heat and direct light.

Many extra sprays can make the opening harsh without extending the drydown. If a scent naturally wears close, value its intimacy—or choose a stronger style when the setting calls for presence.

  • For closeness: forearms or upper chest under clothing.
  • For a wider aura: sides of the neck or shoulders, with restraint.
  • For duration: moisturised skin and compatible fabric, never rubbing.

Performance is not a competition for the largest number. It is the relationship between the perfume, the room and the people sharing it.
