Perfume moves. What you smell in the first bright minute is not what remains on your sleeve at night. Understanding that movement makes descriptions easier to read and skin tests more revealing.

The fragrance pyramid
Top, heart and base notes map how a fragrance may unfold as materials evaporate at different rates. They are not sealed layers switching on one after another; the stages overlap, and some materials can be felt throughout.
Skin, temperature, humidity and dose change the pace. Use the pyramid to know what to notice, while allowing your own wear to be the final answer.
Top notes: the opening gesture
Citrus peel, airy herbs, crisp fruits, aldehydes and light spices often appear first. They create lift, freshness and immediate personality.
Do not let this stage decide a purchase alone. A sparkling opening can settle into warm woods, and a sharp first spray can soften beautifully once the alcohol disperses.
Heart notes: the central idea
As the opening relaxes, florals, aromatic leaves, spices, tea and fruits often form the middle structure. This is usually where the fragrance’s theme feels clearest.
Check again after thirty minutes and two hours. Ask whether the scent still feels like you—not only whether it smells pleasant in isolation.
Base notes: what stays close
Woods, resins, vanilla, amber effects, patchouli and musks commonly anchor the base. They add body, warmth and persistence as the scent becomes smoother and more intimate.
Test the complete arc: smell immediately, then return at twenty minutes, two hours and the end of the day. Repeat on clean skin once you enjoy the story on paper.

A perfume is closer to a piece of music than a still image. Give it time to move from its opening phrase to its final quiet note.
